Geotagging: camera phones and sat nav come together

Geotagging is going to be one of the big features for 2008. A lot of new camera phones are coming to market over the next six months and many have built in GPS Sat Nav. Where this doesn’t happen you can often link your mobile phone via Bluetooth to an external GPS unit.
With the GPS facility, such as in the Nokia N82, you can ‘tag’ your photos with location information, which is stored in the exif tag. When you upload your photos to an online storage site such as Flickr, Picasa, Facebook, Myspace or one of the many other image repositories, the location information can be viewed by your friends when they view the picture. So you can take a picture of a favourite landscape on holiday and people will see the exact location where you took the photo.
As well as this, you can upload the pictures to be viewed on Google Maps. People will be able to view the pictures over a layout of the birds eye view satellite map, giving them a real feel for the area you were in when the picture was taken.
Geotagging is simple to use and many existing GPS enabled mobile phones are being offered this facility via the way of firmware upgrades or simple applications that can be installed on the phone, as in the case of the latest S60 phones from Nokia. There are even privacy settings with Geotagging so you can set the view to friends only or even disable it totally if you wish.
